Monkey-Squirrel-Piranha

By Rowan Landfair, age 10. Rowan tells a story about surviving strange hybrid creatures, journeying from swamp to arctic, and encountering an ice dragon.

Morning Entry #1

I wake up and find myself face-to-face with a monkey-squirrel-piranha. Yep, this is my life. Do you envy me? No? I don’t either. I fling it into the trees. UGH. I kick an alligator-fish out of the way. I search for food: moss (the alligator-fish is edible too but they taste horrible and aren’t worth the fight). The moss tastes like monkey-squirrel-piranha fur. I need to get out of here. “That’s it!” I say. “There must be other places to be on the swamp.” I rush back and start packing.

Tuesday Update 1

I decide to go to the Arctic so I made a coat of monkey-squirrel-piranha head towards the Arctic.

Tuesday Update 2

I just learned something: monkey-squirrel-piranha fur makes a terrible coat! I am freezing! I keep walking. Wait . . .

Tuesday Update 3

Sorry about that. I stopped writing because I saw smoke which means fire! I started running and I found a village! A VILLAGE! Here! I entered the village it was . . . warm?!?

Um . . . something must be wrong. One second I’m practically an ice cube and the next second it’s as warm as back in the jungle? Whatever, I’m too tired to think about it. I’m going to sleep.

Wednesday Update 1

Today I woke up buried in the snow. Ugh. I unbury myself and explore the town.

Wednesday Update 2

I found out that the people here have things called “the eternal fire,” that apparently is a fire that cannot be put out. I think? They were short on details. I’m going to go take a walk outside of the village.

Wednesday Update 3

I have run into a dragon that appears to be made out of ice, so I can’t write very much right now. BRB.

Wednesday Update 4

Ok so here’s what happened: I end up face to leg with the dragon, and it breathes ice on my arm which started spouting ice crystals. I ran for my life. The dragon scared me. I ran into the warm village and here’s the weird part: the dragon started melting! Turns out it was made out of ice! But my arm is now pretty much a block of ice.

Wednesday Update 5

I’m slowly getting the ice off my arm. How? By sticking it in a fire! Yeah that’s what you do when you get frosted around here. Apparently it happens a lot. Yikes. They really need a new method for unfreezing things.
